CAR HISTORY
The first of 5 Hornets, all designed for motorsport, the MkI was awarded 'Converted Kitcar of the Year award' at the Donington kitcar show, and has had numerous successes as a hillclimb and sprint car. Rebuilt by the owner + team from a roadcar to race-spec.
CAR SPEC
Chassis & Body: Designed and constructed from scratch by RAF aero engineer Billy Fletcher using reclaimed aircraft aluminium and other components.
Engine: Ford 1600cc X-Flow with big valve head, Piper cam, Twin Weber 40DCOEs Carbs, K&N Filter. Lightened and balanced, high pressure oil pump.
Exhaust: Westfield, stainless steel 'Straight-through' system
Gearbox: Ford Cortina 1600GT close-ratio 4-speed
Shock absorbers: Koni coilovers all round
Brakes: F: Triumph disc with EBC Green Stuff pads
R: Sierra drum (adjustable F/R balance bar).
Tyres: Yokohama ‘A032 Soft’ control (for both wet and dry races)
Handling: RWD with very light back end (very tail happy in the wet). Has to be ‘trail-braked’ to kill understeer on turn-in.
Performance: 0-60mph in 5.9 seconds. Geared for 112mph.
