Road Rallying

My first experience of motorsport was on the roads of North Yorkshire where Tricia and I competed in 12-car rallies in a 1275cc Morris Marina, it may not have been the quickest car competing but we were never last (probably thanks to my navigator's efforts).

Trackdays

Within a short time of purchasing a Tiger Cat E1 Kitcar I was driving it around the Castle Combe circuit. This was followed by a series of "upgrades" and a series of other track days at Hullavington & Donnington.

Sprinting

Before I "discovered" the wonders of tyre technology I decided to have a go at sprinting via the Tiger Racing Owners Club meets at Curborough. At my first event my rebuilt engine had just 500 miles on it (many gained on the drive to the track) so I was going to "take it easy". Needless to say that as soon as I had the helmet on and was on the start line my throttle foot knew no limits. I finished 4th in class. For the next event I borrowed a trailer, and knowing I would make it home okay was able to win my class. No trailer meant I once again had to drive to the event, my final outing gave me a second in class. With the relatively low budget required by sprinting I started to modify the car for sprinting - including the benefits of some Yokohama A032R tyres which during testing at Sparkford proved highly effective. Unfortunately before it's now aeroscreened debut in competition an "incident" saw the car written off.

Hillclimbing

At a trackday on the Donnington circuit in the Tiger with the A032R tyres there was just one car that over took me - a race prepared RAW Striker, so when I was deciding what to do next I chose to build a Striker (build diary at www.raw-striker.net). A couple of years since it was built I managed to attend a few track days and once again I started thinking again about competition. A training day at Gurston Down hill climb track in 2006 wet my appetite and so I will be making my debut in their Championship in 2008. I see this as a learning year with my engine (a 2090cc pinto meaning I am competing in the over 2 litre class against much more powerful engines) being a little uncompetative in the class I find myself.

Outreach

Since joining CiM I have been involved with outreach in the UK and europe with the British and FIA GT series. Taking my car to fetes, opendays, the castle combe action days and the like I enjoy using my car as an opportunity to meet and talk with people - where the chance arises discussing what a Christian is doing driving such a car.

My first race car Me at Thruxton

I became involved with Christians In Motorsport after talking to Hector Lester at a British GT event at Castle Combe. I looked for his Ferrari in the paddock to find out about the UCB logo on it and he pointed out the CIM website to me.

Since then I have attended several of the GT events to support the outreach work. I have also helped organise the CIM presence at the Castle Combe Action Days.

I am the editor of ‘CIM News’ so please send me any stories you would like to share with other members (or if your emailed copy has gone astray just ask and I’ll send out another)

My racing history consists of being a navigator for a couple of seasons of 12 car road rallies! So my main interest is as a spectator.

I attend Lynch Chapel, Winscombe (URC/Baptist) and they are very supportive of the outreach work we try to do through CIM.
